Twillingate Day 2
July
8, 2017 Saturday
Woke up to clouds. Not as cold as it’s been which helped me get
out of bed. Started raining early in the
day. After breakfast and taking care of
some business Jim and I headed out to see what we can see. It is an indoor day so we went to the
Twillingham Museum first. It is in an
old house which was previously the Anglican Church Rectory. It was furnished with turn of the century
furnishings and had many displays and exhibits about Twillingham.
One room was completely about opera singer,
Georgina Stirling. She was born in
Twillingate and was famous in Paris and Milan.
After her career she returned to Twillingate where she is buried.
We went on further down the road to the Iceberg
Interpretive Center. Turns out it is
mostly a gift shop with photos of icebergs and such. You can also book a boat tour there. Today is not the day to be on the water.
From there we went to Durrell Museum
which has military relics as well as early settler tools and household
goods. The most interesting exhibit is a
polar bear (stuffed of course). That
bear was killed in March 2000 after hitching a ride on an iceflow and ended up
walking into town. Another polar bear
was found two days later. That one was
tranquilized and transported to a safer location.
Time for lunch. On our way to Durrell we passed the Auk
Winery so we decided that was a good place to eat. Restaurant, gift shop and winery all in one. We had lunch and then took a tour and tasting
at the winery. We tried about 8
different wines. All the wines are made
with local berries, blueberries, partridgeberry, crowberry, raspberries,
strawberries. They were all very
nice. They don’t ship to the US and we
are limited to how much we can bring back with us so we passed on any
purchases. We did buy some souvenirs to
take back home. We also say that same
car with the Texas plates as we left the parking lot.
Since we were cold and wet we came back
to the motorhome. On our way back we
followed a very large fifth-wheel. They
were going very slow and finally stopped.
I knew they were unsure of where to turn as my own GPS guided me to a
narrow drive when I mapped the campground.
I got out of the car in the rain and ran up to tell them to just drive
on a bit and they would see the entrance to the campground. They were very appreciative. I wanted to help because I know what it’s
like to be “lost” or unsure.
Spent the evening at the motorhome
working on this blog and trying to make calls using wi-fi calling. The rain went away in early evening and we
had some beautiful sun…for a little while.
I was working on the computer when Jim asked about the fog rolling
in….big change real fast.
