Kippens, Newfoundland

July 19, 2017   Wednesday

Got an early start and headed for Kippens, NL.  We have reservations at Zenzville RV Campground just outside Stephenville.  Took 460 off of TCH 1 and wish we hadn’t…it was a very narrow local road with enough bumps to loosen teeth!  We made it to the campground just fine and camped in site 6.  Very cloudy day but we set out on an excursion after setting up the rig.

We continued on the 406 to make the loop around the small round peninsula which sticks out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  The trip was scenic and up and down and all around.  Unfortunately there was never a public area to pull over and take photos of the cliffs and the beautiful coastline we saw.  Once we drove down a steep hill and at the bottom we saw a HUGE rock and gravel quarry.  It was perched up on a cliff and was amazing to see.  We drove right through the area and was amazed by the size of the place.  Huge trucks were unloading and unloading rocks and gravel and sand.  This is the main business of the people who live around here.

We finally arrived at a park area right on the cliff point of Cape St. George.  There was an information hut with three young people working.  They have bread to offer with butter and jam.  The bread is baked right there in a stone oven every morning.  While there we met Darlene.  She was visiting her mother.  Darlene grew up here and returns for a visit every year.  She now lives in St. John’s.  She shared lots of information about the area and recommended we continue on around the peninsula.  She was very friendly.  We were happy we took her advice…the rest of the loop was beautiful.  It took us through several little towns.  Eventually we made it back to the motorhome just in time for rain.
