Ferry to Newfoundland
JUNE 28, 2017 WEDNESDAY
Today we sail! We had a leisurely morning making sure we
have everything we need to take on the ferry as well as all the travel
documents we need to check in about 1 pm.
We had breakfast and lunch in the motorhome.
It is very overcast and drizzly. We were hoping for a sunny day but it is not
to be. We packed everything up and
headed out. We are stopping for fuel in
North Sydney before we line up for the ferry.
Everything is very close so we do not have to drive far.
Checked in for the ferry with no
problems. Just a few cars ahead of
us. It did not take long before the
place filled up with cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trucks, motorhomes and
trailers. Our ferry is much larger than
the one we had from Portland, Maine. I
hope that means we will have a smoother trip.
While we were waiting to board I met a
man in a truck with a homemade camper on the back. He is from West Virginia and is meeting his
two sons in St. John’s for a fishing trip for the week. Once his boys leave (they are flying) he will
continue to travel in Newfoundland and return by the shorter ferry on the other
side of the island. That is also our
plan once we see all we can. Our plan is
to spend about a month in Newfoundland.
We’ll see how it goes. We only
have one other campground reserved right now and it’s on the western side of
the island at Gros Morne National Park.
While on the ferry we met a couple from
Montreal who are spending a few days in St. John’s. We had a great time talking to them. Another couple was nearby and they gave us
all some advice on where to go and what to see.
They loved Newfoundland so much they bought a summer home there. Another lady was listening to our
conversation and joined our group. She
had lived in St. John’s for 17 years before moving back to the states. She currently lives in New Hampshire but her
youngest son is getting married in St. John’s and she was coming up to help
with planning. She also gave us some
information about St. John’s.
We had a delicious dinner buffet on the
ferry as well as breakfast buffet in the morning. Our cabin was very nice with a private full
bathroom. We had a window so we could
see the ocean outside. The beds were very
nice but I slept on and off all night.
All in all it was a very good experience.
