Last Day in Halifax

June 25, 2017  SUNDAY

Upon leaving the campsite we found a major bike race starting just at the gate to the park.  Everyone must be timed ‘cause the starters let us out of the park between two groups of bikers.  Thankfully they were headed in the opposite direction from us.

We drove back into Halifax.  One the way we passed a large lake where they were having time trials for kayaks.  The water was marked with lanes and the lake was full of kayaks.  The edges of the lake were covered with spectators sitting in camping chairs and even under little tents.  Must be the sport activity for Saturday mornings.

Our guide at the Citadel
We headed straight to the Citadel.  We had gotten a Parks Pass at the visitor’s center yesterday so we got in free.  We did have to pay for parking but that was right at the entrance.  Very sunny today and warm.  The poor guys and girls who work at the Citadel as guides and demonstrators were wearing authentic wool uniform.  Our tour guide says it the best weight loss program he’s done!  We joined up with the tour which had just begun before we came in.  The Citadel is a huge fort…very imposing on the skyline.  It sits right atop a hill near the waterfront.  It has never been attacked.  This structure was the fourth citadel built on this site.  Construction began in 1828 and was completed in 1856.  Since that time a cannon has been fired at noon every day.  The best part was watching a child's birthday party tour the fort.  They each had hats and rifles and a guide who ordered them around like soldiers.

After spending all morning at the Citadel we were hot, tired and hungry.  We drove back down to the waterfront and had lunch at Gahan Brewery overlooking the water.  Since it’s such a beautiful day the harbour is full of sail boats.  We even saw three apache helicopters flying all around the area.  Jim and I walked along the boardwalk watching all the boats and the people.  Everyone was there!  We found an ice cream shop and got a cone each to cool us down.

Made it back to the motorhome to find our neighbor had returned.  He and his wife and her sister had just gotten back from a trip to Newfoundland in the car.  We told them we are on our way there.

We are getting ready to pack up tomorrow and head to North Sydney where we will get on the ferry to Newfoundland on Wednesday.
